SGW / SFD Access Package

Autel, a manufacturer of diagnostic devices, has partnerships with Mercedes, Nissan, Renault, FCA and VAG Group car manufacturers. As a result of this partnership and agreement, the ability to access, unlock the security module SGW / SFD and enable diagnostics of these vehicles using Autel diagnostic devices. Because more and more vehicle manufacturers have installed security modules (SGW/SFD) in their cars, which act like a computer "Firewall", in order to protect vehicle control modules from unlicensed diagnostic devices. Therefore, only official, manufacturer-approved diagnostic devices with Internet access are compatible with the security modules installed in cars, it becomes possible to unlock them and perform certain diagnostic functions.

VAG includes VW, Audi, SEAT, Cupra, Škoda, Lamborghini, Bentley, and Bugatti (Porsche is not included).

What is SGW / SFD function?

This function is used to bypass/unlock the security module (Security Gateway). This module protects the car's main modules from illegal, unauthorized access.

Why do cars need to connect to SGW / SFD?

When the protection module is enabled, many different diagnostic functions may not work, such as service functions, active tests, codings, or simple access to various modules may be limited. Therefore, these SGW / SFD codes provide access to these functions by unlocking the security module.

How to use SGW / SFD codes?

  1. With the help of diagnostics, scan the car automatically or select it manually.
  2. If the car requires the unlocking of the security module, then you will immediately see an information table with a warning whether you want to unlock the security module.
  3. After unlocking the security module (SGW/SFD), you activate all the possible functions that are provided in this car model.

SFD (Security Feature Diagnostic) and SGW (Security Gateway) are two security mechanisms used in automotive diagnostics to protect vehicle data and ensure only authorized access. However, they differ in their implementation, use cases, and the types of vehicles they are associated with.

SFD (Security Feature Diagnostic)

  • Mainly Used By: Volkswagen Group (VAG), including brands like VW, Audi, SEAT, Škoda, and others.
  • Purpose: SFD is a security feature that protects diagnostic access to certain vehicle functions. It requires authorized tools and a secure process for accessing restricted systems.
  • Access: To perform diagnostics on SFD-protected systems, the tool must authenticate with the manufacturer’s server, and often, temporary access is granted based on the tool and technician's authorization.
  • Usage: SFD is often used for specific systems, such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and some engine controls, to prevent unauthorized tampering.

SGW (Security Gateway)

  • Mainly Used By: Primarily found in FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, now Stellantis) vehicles, including brands like Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, and others.
  • Purpose: SGW is designed to prevent unauthorized access to the vehicle's network, typically by blocking diagnostic tools that lack proper authorization.
  • Access: SGW often requires authorized tools that connect through a secure gateway or portal, verifying the technician’s credentials before allowing full access to diagnostic functions.
  • Usage: SGW protects the entire vehicle network, preventing unauthorized access not only to diagnostics but also to telematics and control functions to enhance vehicle cybersecurity.

Key Differences

  • Scope of Protection: SFD is usually more selective, securing certain modules, while SGW generally protects the entire vehicle network.
  • Manufacturers: SFD is associated with Volkswagen Group vehicles, while SGW is typically used by FCA/Stellantis brands.
  • Access Mechanism: SFD requires remote authorization through the manufacturer's server, while SGW often uses a gateway module that physically restricts network access unless an authorized tool is used.

Both systems represent efforts by automakers to safeguard vehicle integrity and ensure that only authorized professionals can perform sensitive diagnostics or repairs.
